Depression Treatment For Teens
TMS Therapy FDA Approved for Ages 15+
Many adolescents are often directed to psychotherapy and medication as primary forms of mental health treatment. While this can be effective in managing mental health symptoms for some, not all individuals find relief through these methods. At Elevium Health, we aim to provide a range of advanced mental health treatments to support our clients’ individualized needs. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a novel treatment that uses advanced technology, rooted in rigorous scientific developments, to alleviate mental health symptoms.

Treatment Options for Depression in Adolescents
Depression is a widely prevalent mental health disorder amongst not only adults but also adolescents. Depressive symptoms can manifest in cognitive, behavioral, and cognitive domains. The experience of these difficulties may be exacerbated by biological and emotional growth, and new experiences that occur in adolescence. There are many treatment options available, however we see a gap in services for adolescents with novel treatments.

Psychotherapy is a common mental health treatment that offers a variety of approaches to suit the client’s needs and preferences. This is especially important for clients undergoing mental health treatment for the first time, which is the case for many adolescents. Its focus mostly commonly lies in creating growth in cognitive patterns and behavioral tendencies. However, the required consistent attendance for appointments can be a deterring factor for some.
Antidepressant medication is another popular mental health treatment. Some clients can find this to be a more simple method of managing their depressive symptoms. There are many options to trial, which offer a variety of outcomes, however beginning and changing between several types of antidepressants can cause a range of side effects and difficulties.

TMS Treatment for Adolescents
The recent FDA approval of TMS treatment as a first-line adjunct therapy for adolescents 15 years and older broadens the horizon of adolescent mental healthcare. We are optimistic that this novel therapy can support adolescents in the same way many of our adult patients have achieved their therapy goals.
To ensure the undergoing of TMS treatment is holistic and can be monitored carefully from multiple aspects, clients should have an existing child and adolescent psychologist or psychiatrist prior to, during, and after TMS treatment. Combined therapy is advantageous as it benefits from the strengths of both treatments implemented. It also allows changes in cognitive, behavioral, and emotional dimensions to be examined carefully and appreciate the full extent of benefits obtained from TMS. We currently do not provide psychotherapy or medical management to adolescents, however, we plan to do so in the near future. Our highly qualified clinicians are experienced in working in interdisciplinary teams allowing for excellent, collaborative care.
Key Considerations
Eligibility for TMS treatment is dependent on individual needs and suitability. A careful decision-making process should be undertaken by your mental health clinician in collaboration with our TMS clinicians. We are committed to finding a treatment plan that aligns best with our patient’s unique therapy goals.
Following its recent FDA approval, several insurance providers have already begun covering TMS treatment for adolescents, however, this does not apply to all insurance companies. We work closely with many insurance companies and are experienced in navigating complicated insurance policies. Contact us to discuss this further.

Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. It is FDA-approved for depression, OCD, and anxiety associated with depression.
How long does a TMS session take?
A typical TMS session lasts about 20 minutes. Sessions are done daily, five days a week, over several weeks depending on the treatment plan.
How many sessions do I need?
For depression, a standard course includes 36 sessions over 6 to 8 weeks. For OCD, 29 sessions are typically required. We also offer accelerated protocols (e.g., 50 sessions over 5 days) for eligible patients.
Is TMS painful?
TMS is not painful, but some people feel a tapping sensation or scalp tingling during treatment. Most patients adjust quickly and report minimal discomfort.
Can I drive home after treatment?
Yes. TMS does not affect cognition or alertness, so you can resume normal activities - including driving - immediately after your session.
Who is eligible for TMS?
TMS is generally recommended for individuals who haven’t responded well to antidepressants or other treatments. Before starting, our clinicians perform a thorough screening to confirm eligibility and ensure safety. Take the Quiz
